I Called Off My Wedding at the Altar When I Found Out I Was a Stand-In for a Ghost

Chapter 9: The Aftermath

Three days later, the official corporate account of the Sterling Group and Harrison’s personal verified page simultaneously posted a massive public statement. They used highly cautious legal language and a humble, groveling attitude.

They admitted that the previous accusations of adultery against me were malicious fabrications. They officially apologized to me and the Hayes family, and pledged under legal threat not to continue any harassment, threats, or attacks through the media.

After the statement dropped, public opinion reversed dramatically. Although there were still some minor doubts from trolls, the wind had entirely shifted. My comment section, which was once overflowing with slander, started to see rational, massive waves of supportive voices.

At the same time, Lawyer Davis arrived at my parents’ estate, bringing two signed, legally binding documents.

One was the finalized divorce agreement, and the other was a document confirming that Harrison had completely relinquished all rights related to the twenty-million-dollar villa and agreed to pay the massive compensation for emotional distress as per the appendix in the marriage contract.

In addition, there was a certified resolution from the Charity Fund’s management board confirming the doubling of the budget to support children with congenital heart disease over the next three years.

“The judge approved it immediately. This time, Mr. Sterling really did bleed a lot of money,” Lawyer Davis gently pushed his glasses up, his voice tinged with a hint of triumphant laughter. “The compensation money has been transferred directly and cleanly to the offshore account you designated. The villa has also been transferred, and the buyer has paid in full.”

“And the company?” I asked, sipping my tea.

“The Sterling Corporation’s stock has plummeted these past few days,” Lawyer Davis smiled. “The board of directors is openly, furiously dissatisfied. It is said that after Chairman Sterling was discharged from the hospital, he summoned Harrison directly to the ancestral estate and gave him a terrible, violent scolding, almost resorting to disinheriting him entirely. His position as CEO in the corporation is now very, very unstable.”

“Regarding Chloe,” Lawyer Davis paused for a moment before continuing. “The evidence of her massive embezzlement of company funds is incredibly clear. Her company has officially filed a federal lawsuit, and her younger brother is currently being held hostage by debt collectors at a foreign casino. I heard the situation for their family isn’t very promising.”

I listened silently, my heart completely unmoved. You reap exactly what you sow.

“And what about the hard drive?” Lawyer Davis lowered his voice to a whisper.

“Don’t worry about the situation with Harrison,” I replied calmly, setting my teacup down. “As long as he and his father behave themselves and don’t ever bother me again, that nuclear bomb will remain dormant forever. But if they still have ulterior motives…”

I smirked slightly, leaving the dangerous sentence unfinished.

Lawyer Davis immediately understood, nodding respectfully. “I understand perfectly. I will continue to closely monitor the situation with the Sterling family.”

Finally, the storm calmed down.

My father safely transferred all the clean money from the sale of the house and the massive compensation from Harrison to my private accounts. The long, endless string of zeros on my bank statement made my eyes dizzy.

This was the heavy price I paid with three years of my youth and a broken, deceived heart.

It was also the massive, triumphant spoils of war I won back with the sheer courage to overturn the billionaire’s chessboard.

“Daughter, what are your plans for the future?” my father’s voice was much gentler over dinner, as if he had just shed a thousand-pound burden from his shoulders.

My plans? I looked out at the deep, beautiful blue sky outside the dining room window.

“First, I’ll leave this city,” I smiled. “I will go anywhere. To a beautiful place where no one knows who I am, to bask in the warm sun, and to dry out all the moldy, dark things left in my heart.”

A month later, I rented a beautiful, secluded little room in a peaceful inn on the shores of Lake Como, Switzerland.

The days passed simply, peacefully, sleeping until I woke up naturally without an alarm. Sitting on the sun-drenched wooden balcony, sunbathing, gazing at the majestic mountains and the crystal-clear turquoise waters of the lake. Occasionally, I would play frisbee with the innkeeper’s energetic Border Collie.

My phone was mostly powered off. I only kept a new, secure number, and occasionally sent a quick message to let my parents know I was safe and happy.

Stories about Harrison and Chloe still occasionally reached my ears through the international business news. Harrison was formally forced to take an indefinite leave of absence by his angry father, temporarily leaving the core of the corporation in disgrace. The Sterling family’s corporate strength was severely damaged, struggling daily to deal with the massive financial consequences of the scandal.

Chloe was preparing to go to federal court for embezzlement, facing a decade in prison, and her younger brother had disappeared completely abroad, his fate unknown to anyone.

All of this tragedy no longer concerned me.

That afternoon, the European sun shone brightly. I lay stretched out comfortably on the balcony lounge chair, wearing dark sunglasses, almost falling into a peaceful sleep.

The Border Collie, named Apollo, ran up to me. He was holding a red plastic flying saucer in his mouth, and pressed his wet, happy nose against my resting hand.

I laughed out loud, a sound of pure joy. I patted his head, took the saucer, and threw it forcefully far away across the green grass. Apollo dashed off like a yellow lightning bolt, happily chasing after the toy.

My phone vibrated slightly on the table. It was a message from my father. It was just one sentence:

Daughter. The Madeline Charity Project… seven children with congenital heart disease in the first rescue effort have all undergone successful, life-saving surgery.

The news just arrived. I clutched my phone tightly against my chest.

The fresh, clean wind from the lake blew, carrying the sweet scent of water and sunlight onto my face. It was warm, gentle. Like a very light, gentle but warm embrace, lingering on my skin and then silently, peacefully fading away.

I took off my sunglasses, squinting at the shimmering, brilliant silver surface of the lake. The sunlight was a little harsh, so I raised my hand to cup it. My fingertips looked almost transparent, completely clean, and utterly pure in the beautiful light.
